A588 is an American standard weathering steel grade. Weathering steel refers to a low alloy steel that has good corrosion resistance in the atmosphere by adding a small amount of alloying elements. Weathering steel is widely used abroad, and related research and product development are also being carried out domestically, which has been put into use. In order to meet market demand and adjust product structure, new product development efforts have been increased, and the American standard weathering steel A588 series, A588GrA, has been successfully developed A588GrB, A588GrC.

Adding a small amount of alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel to ordinary low alloy steel can improve the corrosion resistance of the steel plate. Its atmospheric corrosion resistance is 2-8 times that of ordinary carbon steel, and the longer the use time, the more prominent the corrosion resistance effect.
1. Cu is the most important and commonly used alloying element in atmospheric corrosion resistant steel to improve its corrosion resistance. During atmospheric corrosion, Cu acts as an active cathode, which can cause anodic passivation of the steel and reduce its corrosion rate. However, due to the selective oxidation of Cu, the separately added Cu will accumulate on the surface of the steel, which can easily lead to hot cracks in the production process of Cu containing steel. This is because of the delaying effect of Cu on austenite transformation. As the Cu content increases, the third brittle zone of the steel widens and the brittle temperature range increases.
2. Adding Ni to steel can improve the plasticity and minimum cross-sectional shrinkage of the third brittle zone, and improve the high-temperature plasticity of the steel. Ni is also an effective element for improving atmospheric corrosion resistance. When Ni is combined with Cu, the effect of improving atmospheric corrosion resistance is better. In actual production, adding Ni with a content higher than 1/2 Cu can prevent the occurrence of copper embrittlement. Cr can form a dense oxide film on the surface of steel, improve its passivation ability, and slow down the growth rate of rust layer.
